Red States

In the broad political landscape of the United States, states often bear a "red" or "blue" designation, reflecting the political leanings of the majority of their voters. Red states typically support the Republican Party, generally characterized by conservative views on a range of issues from economics to social policy. In the 2020 election cycle, an array of states from all regions reaffirmed their red state status. 

Using the Republican Voting Index (RVI), a measure that compares the voting patterns of particular states to the nation as a whole in presidential elections, we can ascertain the extent of these red states' Republican predilections.

Key findings from the data include:

• Among the states with the highest RVI, Wyoming came out on top as the most robust red state, boasting an RVI of R+25. West Virginia and North Dakota closely followed with an RVI of R+22 and R+20, respectively.
• There seems to be a strong geographical pattern, with most of the top-ten strongest Republican-leaning states being located in the South or the Midwest. These regions have traditionally been Republican strongholds.
• Interestingly, some states traditionally seen as "swing states" or competitive states, such as Florida and Ohio, maintain a positive RVI, indicating a general Republican lean. Florida and Ohio have an RVI of R+3 and R+6, respectively, underlining their importance to the Republican Party in presidential elections.
• A surprising twist in the data emerged in the form of traditionally Republican-leaning states like Texas, which has seen its RVI narrow over time, currently standing at R+5. This indicates potential future shifts in the political landscape.
