Racism in America: A State-by-State Investigation

Racism has indelibly shaped the societal, economic, and political fabric of the United States for centuries, profoundly affecting the lived experiences of racially marginalized communities. However, the prevalence and impact of racism vary significantly across states, mirroring the immense geographic, cultural, and structural diversity of America. A clear understanding of these discrepancies is vital to informing equitable policy initiatives and fostering improved racial relations in the country.

Racism can be challenging to quantify due to its pervasive and often subtle nature. Against this backdrop, this article explores states manifesting the least racism based on accessible data on hate crimes, discriminatory employment practices, disparities in educational opportunities, health inequities, and racial segregated housing, among others. Granted, this multifaceted approach does not completely capture the full spectrum of racism; it nonetheless provides a useful comparative tool.

From the data, some key findings emerged:

  • Vermont, New Hampshire, and Idaho recorded significantly less than average racism prevalence, serving as noteworthy examples in the fight against racial discrimination and bias.
  • Other states including North Dakota, Oregon, Utah, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Washington, Massachusetts, Wyoming, and Colorado had a below-average prevalence of racism, pointing towards promising trends and practices that other states could potentially learn from and emulate.
  • Conversely, racism prevalence in states such as Georgia, Delaware, Louisiana, and Mississippi was much higher than average, indicating pressing areas for improvement and the need for comprehensive anti-racism interventions.
  • Finally, states such as California, New York, and Connecticut showed an average prevalence of racism, suggesting a mixed reality where progress in certain areas is often counterbalanced by persisting challenges in others.

As America continues to grapple with its racial realities, these findings highlight the need for concerted and state-specific efforts to confront and mitigate the impact of racism in all its forms.

Methodology

Our analysis was conducted from March 1st, 2023, to June 30th, 2023. To determine the level of racism in each state, five core inputs were analyzed:

  1.  Frequency of racial profiling incidents from publicly available crime data
  2. Housing and Employment data to determine discriminatory frequencies
  3. Racial disparities in education and healthcare outcomes
  4. Usage of racial slurs on Twitter
  5. Use of racial slurs on Google Searches

Each was weighted and adjusted for the state's population. The cumulative scores were added up and adapted to determine the racial level of each state relative to the holistic dataset.
