Corn Production in America

Corn, is a staple crop in the United States and plays a pivotal role in the country's agricultural economy. It's not just a food source for humans and livestock, but also a key ingredient in biofuels and a range of industrial products. In 2022, the United States was the world's leading corn producer.

The corn production landscape in the U.S. is diverse, with each state contributing to the overall output based on its unique agricultural conditions and farming practices. The Midwest, often referred to as the 'Corn Belt', is the heart of U.S. corn production, with states like Iowa, Illinois, and Nebraska leading the pack. However, corn is grown in every state, making it a truly national crop.

Here are some key findings from the data:

  • Iowa, the top corn-producing state, harvested a record 2.5 billion bushels in 2022.
  • Illinois followed closely with 2.3 billion bushels, while Nebraska contributed 1.6 billion bushels to the national corn supply.
  • Minnesota and Indiana also made significant contributions, with 1.4 billion and 965 million bushels, respectively.
  • Outside the Corn Belt, states like Texas, Kentucky, and North Carolina also play a significant role in corn production, with outputs ranging from 104 million to 204 million bushels.
  • Even states with smaller agricultural sectors, like Delaware and Washington, contribute to the national corn output, producing 27 million and 18 million bushels, respectively.
